This is the last month of the year, just before Rosh Hashanah. At this time, it is customary to engage in soul-searching, each person individually, a special time for an annual summary and making resolutions for the future.
During the month of Elul and the Ten Days of Repentance between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, Jewish communities have the custom of gathering to recite together various selections of verses, prayers, and liturgical poems that contain motifs of expressing remorse, lamentation over the destruction, and prayer for redemption.
