Aristotle, one of the most famous Greek philosophers, said: “Harmony lies in contrast...” And Naples represents this idea well through the decumani — the Superior, Inferior, and Major (three main street axes in the old city, dating back to the Greek/Roman period, which cross the center from east to west). The decumani lead tourists from the Greek and Roman city to the medieval city, and from there to the Renaissance period and the unification of Italy.

The Decumani are three straight, wide streets, designed by Hippodamus of Miletus. They run from east to west and are intersected perpendicularly by about 20 smaller streets called Cardines. At the intersections of the Decumani and Cardines are the Insulae (urban blocks/building blocks) — parts of the city where private buildings of the nobility stood alongside public and sacred buildings. This created a spatial separation between the areas of the nobility and those of the clergy.
