In the 19th century, Jaffa rose to prominence in history. It became a magnet for visitors from around the world—diplomats, clergymen, visionaries and dreamers, and seekers who set out to discover the magic of the East.

The tour follows these individuals and the story of 157 Americans who arrived in Jaffa with a vision. Messianic, hoping to hasten the coming of the Messiah.

During this period, Jaffa underwent a transformation, changing from a traditional port city to a modern city developing at a rapid pace. It was nicknamed „Umm al-Gharib” — Mother of the Stranger — because it welcomed all who came through its gates: believers who sought to welcome the Messiah, charitable people, diplomatic envoys, and travelers who were captivated by the charm of the land.

Capturing America

Imagine 42 days on a sailing ship from distant America to the Holy Land.
Thus begins the adventure of a group of Christians from Maine who arrived to prepare the ground for the coming of the Messiah. The year is 1866.
But the disappointment was as great as the expectations. After a year and a half, they left the place and returned home. Their houses were purchased by German Templers who were a little more determined to welcome the Messiah. Hence the additional name of the place, the American-Templer Colony.
But once again, it turns out that the Messiah is "neither coming nor ringing..."
This is the story of the American Templer colony, a village in the heart of the city.

Tour to The village in the city, from the station complex through the railway park and the American colony.
The tour includes a meeting with the church organist.

On this tour, we will discover:

  • When was the train whistle first heard, and who was behind its creation?
  • What messianic dreams were planted among its orchards, and what remains of them?
  • A tour in which we will walk in the footsteps left behind here in this space to this day.

About the place

A stroll through the neighborhood reveals architecture that corresponds with ideas from the place where they originated: Tiled roofs, storm-proof basements, wooden walls, and more.

The church in the heart of the colony is associated with the visit of the German emperor here. Wilhelm II, the emperor who brought the Jewish people to the land and slept in Jaffa, not far from here. Where did the emperor sleep? You can find out in the guest book of the Emmanuel Hostel, formerly the Park Hotel, which was indeed located in the heart of a park with fish ponds, parrots, and monkeys, and which Agnon mentions in his book Tmol Shilshom. Next to it, at the Drisco Hotel, or Jerusalem Hotel as it is also known, which has recently undergone careful restoration, you can admire this beauty.

Alongside the old houses of the colony, a new neighborhood has sprung up in the spirit of the place, the Village., which somewhat recreates the orchard landscape that used to be there.

From here you can go down To the Noga neighborhood, where you can immediately feel the togetherness of the city, A neighborhood with a community spirit.

If you still have energy, you can continue toward the Flea Market and Old Jaffa, or choose the route that connects to the train station complex and Neve Tzedek, or toward Florentin. No matter where you go, it will be charming, in a different way.

It turns out that to enjoy all this goodness, you'll need to stay for a few days or come back and visit the city again. And of course, as usual, I recommend a guided tour because it's always a different experience.

The story of the Immanuel Church is linked to the second phase of the colony, after the Americans left and it was purchased by the German Templers.

How is it connected to the visit of German Emperor Wilhelm II? We find out during the tour.

Meanwhile, we gather to listen to the sounds of the organ.

A visit to Emanuel's house and garden reveals some of the magic of this enchanting garden, which was planted here a century ago.

Despite the agricultural dream of welcoming the Messiah, the practical approach worked: here in the colony, many were involved in tourism. The Drisco Hotel is one example of this.

Reed Holmes, a resident of Maine, is the man who began researching the story of the Americans who arrived in Jaffa and documented their story in his book "The Pioneers.".

When he arrived in Israel, he purchased a dilapidated house and turned it into a guest house. He enlisted the help of Jane, a civil engineer, and over time they became a couple.

For many years, Jane and Reed divided their time between Maine and the American colony, and their home is a museum dedicated to the history of the place.
